Muskoka chair: folding vs fixed

The hinge is where the weight goes. That is the whole trade.

A folding Muskoka chair has a pivot where the seat meets the back, so it collapses flat for the shed or the car. It is a real convenience for a small balcony or a chair that travels. It is also the one place in the design that carries the whole load every time someone sits down, and a pivot is never as strong as a bolted joint. Folding chairs are the ones that develop a wobble.

A fixed chair is bolted through solid boards at every joint and does not move. It does not fold, and it does not need to: a chair made from HDPE lumber lives outside all year, so there is nothing to put away. Ours ships flat and assembles once, in about twenty minutes.

When folding is right

A balcony you need to clear, a chair for the boat, a cottage where the deck is stacked away for winter. For a chair that stays where it is, fixed is stronger, quieter and cheaper.
