Distance
Front edge of the seat 3 feet from the edge of a wood fire, 2 feet from a gas one. That is the distance at which a person is comfortable, and it is the distance at which the chair is nowhere near warm. HDPE softens at temperatures well above anything a seated person could tolerate; the chair is never the limiting factor, you are.
Embers
A spark that lands on the seat will mark it — a small dark spot, like on anything — and will not ignite it. Brush embers off; use a spark screen on windy nights. This is the one thing to know.

Questions
Will the heat from a fire pit damage HDPE?
Not at any distance you would sit at. It needs sustained temperatures far above what a person can bear to soften. Embers mark it; they do not burn it.
