The Black Adirondack chair

The modern one. A deep matte charcoal-black that makes the shape of the chair the whole point.

The Classic Adirondack Chair, ottoman and side table in Black

Black is what modern homes choose, and it is the second most popular color after Cedar. It turns the chair into a silhouette — the fan of the back, the wide arms, the tilt — and lets the shape do the talking. On a pale deck it anchors the space; against dark siding it disappears into the architecture and the lake behind it is what you see.

It is a warm black rather than a cold one, closer to charcoal than to ink, so it does not look like plastic in daylight. In full sun it does get warm to the touch, as every dark outdoor surface does; in high summer it is fine in the shade of an umbrella or by mid-afternoon on a breezy dock, and a cushion settles it entirely.

Scratches do not show. That sounds small until you have owned a painted black chair; here the color goes through the board, so a scuff from a dragged cooler is the same black underneath.

Who picks Black

New builds with black window frames. City balconies. Anyone pairing the chair with a white or grey house. Restaurants and hotels, because it hides everything and matches everything.

Questions

Does a black Adirondack chair get too hot in the sun?

It gets warm, as any dark surface does. In shade or in the evening it is fine; in direct midday sun a cushion or a thin towel makes the difference. Lighter colors stay cooler if the chair will live in full sun all day.
